This advertisement is a well-designed, linear composition. The use of red as an ascent color makes certain important areas stand out. Also the use of the contrasting colors of black and white produce a balanced composition. They are able to display their company and the key aspects of their company with a very simple but complex design.

We were all given words to demonstrate using photoshop, my word was awe. My first thought was of the heavens, and beautiful things in nature. I decided that I wanted to create a image using nature in a very colorful and textured way. I was trying to decide which background to choose, I ended up with the bottom image because I thought the image seemed more realistic. After learning about the filter, and ways to merge layers I will try to use the same ideas and create a more abstract pattern.

This is my first attempt working with photoshop. I choose a Frank Gehry building, which we then had to use the building to create a form of nature using photoshop. I choose to use the reflectiveness of the building to rotate and multiply in a pattern in order to create a form of water. I feel that this was pretty successful for my first time using photoshop, however I am sure after spending more time with the different techniques I will find many ways to improve my work.

The computer systems have come a long ways within recent years. They are now able to assist and aid designers throughout their design process. These systems have created a way for designers and architects to make quick and easy corrections to a large working process. Also, it gives them a way to show ideas to their clients and easily show many different views. This allows a connection between the designer and client. They are both able to view and discuss the elements of their design. Another advantage of the development of the computer is the Internet. Designers are now able to easily research, share and view new topics. The use of the Internet is a way to find information fast. Because of the speed of the computer designer are able to research and create numerous drawings within a short amount of time. With the improvement of the computer it seems to better understand what the user is trying to create. This makes it easy for us to create, customize, and correct many different types of work. With the development of the computer people are becoming more and more dependent of the computer. They are becoming easier to use, and I feel that they will only be more prominent in the future. Therefore, I feel that computers have greatly helped designers by decreasing the amount of time they spend in their design process. Also, the use of the computer will be a help to the environment. If all of the work is eventually done on the computer them we will be able to work, communicate, and view the design ideas without the use of paper.

Intent Narrative

The intent of the suite area is to bring aspects of the exterior to the interior to provide storage and living areas. The push-out and built-in areas of the walls create extra spaces for storage. The bedrooms also include the necessities for a new mother. These include the bed, crib, and changing area. The color choices relate back to the building's color scheme. Therefore, the design of the suite area relates to the exterior in order to provide an adequate living area for the mother and her child.

Connection

The exhibit was carefully planned in all aspects to be able to “bring history close to home and educating our community about where we have come from and where we are going.” The structures created were able to relate to the work on display, while also relating to the viewer in the space. The materials were also carefully chosen to convey to the work. The structures in the exhibit work with the space to create an inviting atmosphere. Each part of the displays and space were well planned in order to relate someway back to the viewer and to the work shown. Therefore, the main concept of this exhibit is the sense of connection. Being able to connect the past to the future, connecting the work on display to the structures, connecting the exhibit to the installation space, and connecting the viewer to the exhibit are all aspects of the concept of connection.
The exhibit is laid out is a way that you are able to walk through and view the work. The structures are organized in a way that unites and divides the space. The design and colors create a warm and inviting atmosphere. The exhibit contains the work of Edward Lowenstein and other works of modernism. Lowenstein’s work contained natural and modern materials. The materials used in the exhibit relate back to the work of Lowenstein. The structures are created with wood, and types of metal. The colors and material creates a modern and environmental design. Therefore, the materials and color scheme used to create the exhibit were a way to respond to the work of Lowenstein.

As the viewer you are able to walk through and explore the exhibit. Throughout your experience you relate and discover along the way. The placement of the structures provides you with a path in which you create connections within the displays. It is carefully organized in a pattern where you are able to get a sense of what modernism is and then continue to walk though and see how it affected Greensboro. After first walking into the exhibit there is information and images explaining modernism. Then you continue walking around in the exhibit to view some works by famous architects of modernism. There is text and images about some of these architects and designers. After viewing these displays you continue walking though and make connections to the work of Lowenstein. The way that the graphics are arranged provides you with a summary of modernism and architects then leads to Lowenstein’s work. This arrangement works well because it provides you with an explanation of Lowenstein’s design and shows you some of his main influences. Throughout the exhibit there were different types of media. These included the actual structure with the images, the video screen, and the computer source. I feel that the media that worked best was the structures with the images. As the viewer you are able to better relate this three-dimensional media. The viewer could walk though and experience the exhibit. However, I do think that the other sources of media were a way to better connect the graphics on the three-dimensional structures. The images shown on the screen also helped the viewer interact with the exhibit. The different types of media give the viewer a better sense of Lowenstein’s work. It shows different aspects and relates to the different media that Lowenstein worked with.

The sketch above shows the path that the structures create and shows how the different types of media that are displayed in the exhibit.

The way in which the exhibit is arranged and the space that in, which it is installed, has a large impact on the concept. The glass wall acts as a “glass curtain” reaching out into the space. As you are approaching the space you are able to see through the glass, and how the different structures lead you through the exhibit. This provides a way for the viewer to connect to the exhibit. Also, this relates back to what was said earlier about the warm and inviting space. Being able to see the parts of the exhibit as you are passing by creates a welcoming atmosphere. Once you are in the space the glass wall connects you back to the lobby. It creates a notion of reaching out and connecting the present surroundings to what you are viewing in the exhibit.

Therefore, I feel that the each aspect of the exhibit was well planned in order to create an interactive experience as you are viewing the works on display. The light, and color choices create an inviting atmosphere. The arrangement of the images and text provided you with all of the information that you as the viewer needed in order to understand the exhibit. After first walking in there was a summary to explain some of the design concepts. Once entering the layout of the structures allowed you to walk around and view the exhibit. They were carefully placed in order for you to explore and make connections within the works. The different types of media used provided a way to keep the viewer interactive with the exhibit. Also, this related back to the different types of works that the exhibit was covering. In conclusion, I feel that the three-dimensional structures in the exhibit force the viewer to interact, explore and create connections throughout all aspects of the design.

1. During this class I have learned to appreciate and notice the style and design elements of the different time periods. Now instead of just thinking that a building is appealing I am able to notice each design element and know why it was designed that way. We were able to see the different styles throughout history and see how they have developed through time. Also, we have been able to see how different movements and inventions have affected architecture and design. Now I am able to notice these things and relate the element to the design period that it was completed.
2. An architect that we have covered it class that I feel is interesting is Frank Llyod Wright. An example of his work is the Prairie house designed between 1900 and 1917. This building contains low sloping roofs and overhangs. Also, the house was designed with horizontal bands that show the use of clean lines. Wright was one of the world’s most prominent and influential architects. During his career he was able to create a series of highly individual styles. The Prairie house shows how Wright was able to influence and help create the design elements used throughout history and today.

3. I feel that a way that we would be able to “fall back on history” while still creating a new perspective is to use the new inventions that we have today. We will always look at the past designs because they are available for us to see and learn from. However if we do look at the past designs we are still able to build off of them and create a new perspective. Now we are able to see how the previous cultures created their architecture and use that to build from. Even if we use some of the same elements they may have different meanings that will change the style of the building. Also, we continue to grow in technology, which will provide new ways to design buildings.
4. The topic that my group was assigned was women’s rights. One of the categories that I discussed of the National Organization of Women, known as NOW. This is a good way to show the connection between the topic in the 1950’s and 1960’s and today. NOW is an organization that was created in the 1960’s and is sill in progress today. When the organization first started they were fighting such things as equal job opportunity, and equal pay. Today they are working with topics such as abortion, and violence against women.

Our group has worked together taking the charrettes, comments, and our researched artist to create a concept for the design of our building. The artist influenced the concept of pushing and pulling. We have designed the layout of our floors to push and pull away from the original shape in order to accent different areas. We also used the charrettes to create a more open, fluid floor plan. We have more open public areas, while the private areas are more closed off. The floor plan was considered and the adjacencies of the rooms were took into consideration. Therefore, the group is now considering which rooms will be pulled and pushed in order to create an interesting exterior of the building.
